Pearl History

It is believed that the first pearls were discovered by humans as they scavenged for food along seashores.

Pearls have a long, vibrant history. Once used as currency, they later became a status symbol for royalty in the 13th and 14th centuries.  Pearls also appear in mythologies of the Far East and have purported medicinal qualities, such as curing mental illness when ingested.

Perhaps one of the most famous accounts of pearls in history is the story of Cleopatra and Mark Antony’s famed banquet.  To convince Rome that Egypt possessed immense wealth, it is said that Cleopatra crushed a single pearl into a glass of wine and drank it as proof to Mark Antony that she could consume the wealth of a nation in one meal.

Today they continue to be revered for their beauty and sophistication.  Pearls are a timeless classic, epitomizing one of the most valued jewels loved by societies around the world.
